How to Beat the Heat in Bend

Nikki Cleveland

Summer in Bend is one of the best times of year to visit, but thanks to Central Oregon’s high desert climate, temperatures can climb into the 90s and occasionally top 100°F. The good news? There are plenty of ways to cool off without sacrificing a day of adventure.

Whether you’re looking to jump in the water, escape into the mountains, or simply find a shady patio with a cold drink, here’s how to beat the heat in Bend.

Float the Deschutes River

If you ask a local how they cool off, this will probably be the first answer.

Floating the Deschutes River is practically a summer tradition in Bend. Grab an inflatable tube, hop on the shuttle, and enjoy a leisurely float through town. Along the way you’ll find calm stretches, small rapids, and plenty of opportunities to dip your feet—or your whole tube—into the refreshingly cold water.

The river is fed by mountain snowmelt, so even on the hottest afternoons it stays surprisingly cool, making it one of the best places to escape the heat. Bend Park & Recreation maintains maps, shuttle information, and safety guidance for the popular float route. Find more information here.

Head for the Cascade Lakes

Sometimes the best way to cool off is to leave town.

Just 30 to 45 minutes from Bend, the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway leads to dozens of alpine lakes surrounded by pine forests and mountain views. Popular spots like Elk Lake, Sparks Lake, Devil’s Lake, and Cultus Lake offer swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and shaded shorelines perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

The higher elevation also means temperatures are often noticeably cooler than downtown Bend.

Find a shaded patio

When it’s too hot to sit in the sun, head for one of Bend’s shaded patios.

Many local breweries and restaurants offer covered outdoor seating or umbrellas that make enjoying lunch or an afternoon drink much more comfortable. Bend’s brewery scene is especially good for this, with plenty of spacious patios where you can relax without feeling like you’re baking in the sun.

Visit the Bend Whitewater Park

Whether you’re surfing, tubing, kayaking, or simply watching everyone else have fun, the Bend Whitewater Park is one of the city’s most popular places on a hot afternoon.

Bring a lawn chair, dip your feet in the river, or watch skilled surfers ride the standing waves while enjoying the cool breeze coming off the water.

Start your day earlier

One of the best-kept secrets about Bend summers is that mornings are incredible.

Temperatures are often cool enough for a walk, bike ride, or hike before breakfast. If you’re planning to visit Pilot Butte, hike Tumalo Falls, or explore the Deschutes River Trail, getting an early start lets you avoid both the heat and the biggest crowds.

Public health officials also recommend limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon whenever temperatures are unusually high.

Cool off in the pool

Not everyone wants to spend the day in the river.

As a guest, you’re welcome to cool off in our on-site pool at Bend Riverside. In addition, Juniper Swim & Fitness Center and Larkspur Community Center both offer recreation swimming, family swim times, and indoor air-conditioned spaces when temperatures soar. They’re a great option for families with younger children or anyone looking for a break from the afternoon heat.

Take a walk along the river

You don’t have to get in the water to enjoy it.

The Deschutes River Trail follows the river through Bend, with plenty of shady sections, benches, and scenic viewpoints. The combination of tree cover and the cool air coming off the water often makes it feel several degrees cooler than nearby streets.

If you’re staying at Bend Riverside Rentals, you’re already in a great location to enjoy one of the city’s most relaxing evening walks.

Grab ice cream

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one. Downtown Bend has plenty of places to grab ice cream, frozen yogurt, or a cold coffee before wandering through local shops. It’s an easy way to cool down while exploring the heart of the city. Bonta Gelato, Goody’s, and Birdsong Ice Cream are all great options with a variety of delicious flavors.

Save the hike for sunset

When afternoon temperatures peak, consider slowing down for a few hours.

Spend the middle of the day relaxing by the river, visiting a brewery, or taking a break at your vacation rental. Then head back outside in the evening, when temperatures begin to fall and the golden light makes Bend even more beautiful.

Summer sunsets in Central Oregon often last well into the evening, giving you plenty of time to fit in one more adventure before calling it a day.

Stay somewhere that helps you stay cool

After a full day in the sun, there’s nothing better than returning to a comfortable place to unwind.

At Bend Riverside Rentals, you’re just steps from the Deschutes River, making it easy to enjoy cooler evening walks, watch the water from your balcony, or relax indoors before heading back out for dinner downtown. Being close to both the river and downtown means you can spend less time driving in the heat and more time enjoying everything Bend has to offer. Plus, our condos and cottages have air conditioning to keep you cool and comfortable on those hot summer days.

No matter how hot the forecast gets, Bend offers plenty of ways to stay comfortable. From floating the Deschutes and exploring mountain lakes to enjoying a shady patio or an evening stroll along the river, you’ll find that beating the heat is just another excuse to experience the very best of Central Oregon.
